When this occurs, the ECU reduces fueling and requested boost to ensure that the turbo is not damaged.

We will now cover the potential causes of this situation. Some of these procedures may exceed your level of mechanical competency, and should be left to an expert with a strong TDI background.

Cause 1 boost leaks. A boost leak is a hole in the intake track between the intake manifold and the compressor outlet of the turbo.

This portion of the intake is under pressure when the engine is loaded. If there is a hole in this part of the intake track, boost pressure will leak out, and the MAP sensor boost sensor that sends a signal to the ECU reporting boost will not be able to accurately report on the turbo's behavior. Boost leaks are typically accompanied by a hissing or whistling noise.

The area of the intake track that is leaking will typically be covered in a jet black oily film. This is oil that seeps past the turbo's oil seals, and within reason, is completely normal.

Inspect the pressurized portion of the intake track for leaks, and remedy it as necessary. Cause 2 mis-adjusted VNT actuator.

RideenFeb 3, Right some updates. They checked the whole car, told me they needed it overnight to try a "cold start" then half an hour later they said a pipe underneath was twisted and intermittently rubbing on some wires, causing limp mode. I got mine done under warranty luckily. Although what a pain that was. If it's been reconditioned I doubt ts that. You checked the MAF? I have same problem, 05 plate with 91, miles and gone into limp mode twice, but when restarted runs fine with full power and siren police car noise, luckily have a warrenty with maindealer and waiting for approval and they say turbo, so glad as its 2k to fix they reckon. So just bit the bullet and booked into Statller in Sheffield to have a bran new turbo fitted, costing just over a grand but i have had enought of people telling me what it is and them being wrong, also i am fed up of having a lovely car that runs like a bag of spanners Will post back up once its done this friday.

They say they had too many recon turbos failing, leaving disputes between the customer, garage and supplier as to who should bear the costs. So I stumped up for a new turbo but am reassured that the garage cover all parts and labour.

Actuator modification makes no impact to amount of overboost, neither did renewal of vacuum side of things or N In fact it even overboosts when the VNT is in minimum boost position.

So my way of thinking is either Too much exhaust gases pushing the turbine Too much air being drawn in although the MAF does reflect this with much larger actual than requested It does have a loud idle whistle and was cleaned out sticky vanes a year and a half ago Vanes are now totally free however. What fueling mods? If applicable. Are you getting limp mode? If so are you sure the limp mode is caused by overboost?

A stock car shouldn't be able to create excessive drive pressure as it is still limited by the stock fueling parameters and volumes, so I would rule out excessive drive pressure if your stock. I would also rule out turbo damage, if you had damage you would've seen a catastrophic failure by now. HAve you checked to see if your intake manifold is clogged. I had the same issue with mine.

Constant overboost over 3k rpm in th gears, and the MAF actual vs. I think a clogged manifold is your issue. My recommendation would be too take off the EGR and see how it and the manifold looks. Mine looks alot like the pictures shown in the DIY below.

I have already changed the MAP as a course of diagnosis. Had the problem before and after remap another reason why it doesnt seem to be control related - more mechanical Paid a garage to clean my intake manifold out along with a decat. It is hitting limp mode with the fault code. This is only during full throttle runs made more apparent in the higher gears. Thats what I get on a WOT run. And the actuator does shoot back to rest too another reason to think it isn't control related.

Most other issues would cause low boost. If your confidant the vanes are free then you should try a n Make sure your vaccum hoses are routed correctly. How are you confirming this? Riding under the hood while a helper does WOT run?

Overboosting with the actuator disconnected surely means that the control side of things is having no effect - positive or negative?
